This will be a somewhat emotional thread on @NATO After many years working for the Alliance I feel an imperative to share some thoughts. So: 1) pretending that we are not dealing with an existential crisis for NATO is no longer possible nor desirable. Action is required now. 1/n

1. Threats made by the current US administration towards Allies of 🇺🇸 regarding issue of territory and the use of economic blackmail are direct violations of Art. 1 and 2 of the North Atlantic Treaty. They cannot be ignored and downplayed. They must be discussed urgently. 2/n

2. The political gravity of the situation and importance of the matter due to security consequences suggest that it would be highly advisable to hold a NATO summit level meeting asap. It would provide a unique opportunity to discuss the crisis and ways of resolving it. 3/n

3. The Alliance - the most successful one in history, one may add - is not a property of one or even of a few current leaders. Generations have worked hard to make it strong, some people have sacrificed their lives at its service. NATO belongs to all 32 member states. 4/n

4. Those in the position of power today who harbour a covert intention to abrogate their country's obligations towards other allies ensuing from the treaty, should declare them openly and thus open themselves to a judgment of their fellow citizens and institutions.5/n

5. One remains both an optimist and a realist (no contradiction there). The value of NATO in today's challenging world is as strong today as it was 1949. Every Ally - small or large, on both sides of the Atlantic - benefits from being part of NATO. 6/n

These benefits are political, military and economic in nature. They should be publicised once again, without delay. Harming NATO would only bring joy to adversaries of member states and enemies of freedom. They should not have a reason to celebrate. Animus in consulendo liber. /

I would honestly remove America from NATO and expel American troops until a different leader emerges. Sad, but necessary and may compel the pussy legislators we have to expel Trump for good.
